教你美國人用字的些微差異

對母語人士來說，大多數字意非常接近的字，其實都有細微的差異，有時甚至只是使用時機的不同，譬如 since 和 ever since 非常很接近，兩者都是指事情由過去開始，延續到現在，並可能延續到未來。差別在於 since 通常是在某個時間點之後，而 ever since 比較會用在過去的某一個事件之後。

譬如一般比較會說 Since 2011… 而不會說 Ever since 2011…。或是會說 I haven't eaten since last night，這時同樣也不會用 ever since。

又譬如 quite 是一個很好用的字，我們看看下面兩句話的差別

This coffee is not as good as Starbucks.
This coffee is not quite as good as Starbucks.

這兩句話中所提的咖啡其實都跟 Starbucks 差異不大，但第二句話中加了quite 就更拉近了彼此的差異， 可以說是 almost as good as Starbucks。課程中 Luke 老師教了大量這樣的用字差異。

如何用英文說出一個千億的數字

常常華人在聽或者是要說英文的數字時，總是反應不過來，尤其是一個比較大的數字的時候，主要的原因就是中文的數字單位和英文不一樣，英文沒有「萬」的觀念。

其實英文的數字邏輯非常簡單，就是以三位數為單位，Luke 老師會教你很簡單計算的方式，也是每一個美國人使用的方式，讓你可以像美國人一樣很快的說出如千億之類很大的數字。

美國人的說話禮貌

很多人認為美國人說話非常的「直接」，但其實在「直接」的同時，美國人生活當中的英文用詞其實包含了非常多有禮貌、以及委婉的說法。譬如有禮貌的拒絕一個邀請時，可以說 I love to, but...

要用比較委婉的說法是 kind of 或是 a bit 都是非常適合的用字，意思和中文中的「有點」非常類似，譬如 I'm kind of in the middle of something. 我現在手上有事在處理。或是 I'm kind of busy right now. 或是 I'm a bit busy right now. 我現在有點忙。

如果你還不知道美國人是怎麼有禮貌的說話，那你就有點遜囉！

過去完成式到底是什麼意思？

過去完成式表示在過去的某個時間點之前，某些事情就已經完成了。譬如 I went to Canada on Monday. I had already been there three times. 所以我一共去了加拿大幾次呢？

在這句英文中使用了過去式以及過去完成式。I went to Canada on Monday. 我週一去了加拿大，是用過去式。後面的句子 I had already been there three times. 表示在週一之前我就已經去過加拿大三次了，加上週一的這一次，所以我一共去過加拿大四次，這個就是過去完成式真正的意思，在過去某個時間點之前，某些動作就已經完成。

用英文來說，過去完成式就是 We basically are talking about past things that happened before another past thing.

美國口語常用的說法到底是什麼意思

很多美國人常掛在嘴邊的 What’s up 到底是什麼意思? 是 How are you 嗎？其實兩者是不同的，而 What’s up？的真正意思要看當時說話的狀況（by context）

第一種情況：在大多數的情況下 What’s up 是一個不正式的打招呼方式，就像是 Hi 或 Hey 的說法，語意上類似 What have you been up to? 或者是 What are you doing? 最近在忙些什麼？一般回覆會說 Not much, you?

第二種情況：也有可能真的有事情發生了，可以說 What’s up？ 這個時候的 What’s up？意思跟 What’s Wrong? 是一樣的

另外在電視電影中美國人常說 Would you like to get a drink?
這時候是指在問要喝飲料? 水？酒？或任何東西嗎？ 這其實是在詢問是否要喝含酒或是含酒精的飲料，而不是水或一般的飲料。
